Meet Dr. B

Hi Everyone! My name is John Byrnes MD. I’m the author of The Quality Playbook and the founder of Quality BootCamp® and the HRO Academy™

This is my blog. It’s focused on the tools you need to create great clinical outcomes and safer care for your patients.

We’ve all experienced the frustration of building quality and safety programs while hitting the inevitable barriers. To help, I’m building this site to be a rich repository of practical guidance for designing and building quality programs that get results. It’s no easy job, but I’ll cover what to do and how to do it, and more importantly, I’ll give you checklists, tools, and templates that will help you get your job done more effectively and more efficiently.

I don’t teach the theory, but I show you how to do it by breaking down big concepts into small bite-sized action steps.

If you’ve ever been frustrated by hearing quality and safety theory without the “how-to”, this site shows you exactly how to get the results you dream about. The content is based on my own 20 years of front line experience and from award winning healthcare organizations around the country.

I typically post three times a week. To make sure you don’t miss the newest information, sign up on the top right side of this page. You can always unsubscribe at any time and I’ll never share your email address!

In the coming months, I’ll also introduce a podcast and a webinar series where I will do a deep dive on the most important topics and interview nationally recognized quality and safety experts.

My Biography

I am the former Chief Quality Officer of Spectrum Health and held similar positions at Lovelace Health Systems, Catholic Healthcare West (now Dignity Health), and Sharp Healthcare.

I have worked in quality and safety for most of my career. I started my quality journey when I was still practicing Anesthesiology. I attended several training programs with three wonderful colleagues and that marked the start of my career in quality. Thank you to John, Maggie, Mike, and Neal.

I love quality and safety work. As I helped develop programs that improved care for hundreds of thousands of patients and watched two family members die because of errors, I knew I had found my calling.

Over the next 20 years I held leadership positions in hospitals, medical groups, integrated systems and even a health plan. I learned how all parts of the healthcare system work and developed quality and safety programs appropriate for each.

I’ve worked with great teams of professionals – all are quality and safety experts in their own right. We experimented, tried new approaches, and from our real world experience we learned what worked and what didn’t. Over time we refined our approach to one that delivers truly incredible results. The final test was at Spectrum Health where our techniques resulted in over 100 quality awards and the coveted Top 15 Health System designation for quality and safety four years in a row.

It’s these tools and tips that I include on this site. They’ve been field-tested, replicated in other large and small organizations, and really do work. I’ve also learned what not to do and what doesn’t work. These lessons learned will save you valuable time as you implement your own program. I left Spectrum in 2012 and now run my own company – Byrnes Healthcare Group – where I continue to write, teach, and speak on quality & safety.

I have contributed to 8 books, countless journal articles and have given presentations to hundreds of groups. My first book, The Quality Playbook will be published in November with a companion workbook. I use the workbook in a 4 day course, Quality BootCamp®

I will continue to write, teach and help others as we walk this journey together – the journey to create a healthcare system that delivers truly world-class outcomes in an error free environment. I believe it’s possible and I invite you to join me.  Our obligation to our patients is one of the most sacred trusts given to us … let’s not let them down.

Together, we’ll build quality and safety programs that take healthcare in America to a new level.

My Family

I am married to my wife, Lori.  She’s a wonderful partner turned country girl and now runs our ranch where she raises Alpacas and their companion guardians, Great Pyrenees dogs. We have two daughters and live near Grand Rapids, Michigan. You can see our farm, beautiful alpacas and Great Pyrenees at Irish Rose Alpacas.

In my free time, I enjoy writing, reading, traveling, photography, and spending time in the pastures with our growing menagerie.
